Theh it might be time to buy a network printer and put it on the network.

Alas, I agree.
With neither ethernet nor wifi connectivity on the current printer, networking it may be a real challenge.

Having said that, perhaps you have a friend, family member or neighbor who might be able to help you with on-site troubleshooting & some sort of workaround, before you opt for a new printer?

Where is your Internet coming from?  What Internet devices do you use?

 

Even if both your PCs are on WiFi, it's possible to assign them each a fix IP address, or at least to your desktop.  That is what you need to share its printer.  If you get your WiFi only from your ISP, I would recommend that you purchase a router with WiFi that you will configure accordingly.  It should be the only device directly connected to your ISP.
