Hi and thanks in advance for your help.

I have a HP Pavilion 15 running Win 11 Home Version 23H2

I had a new battery installed in November last year after the old one died.

The new battery is a genuine HP and was installed by a computer tech.

No issues for a couple of months but all of a sudden the battery stopped accepting a charge and the charge light on the side of the laptop started blinking.

I opened the laptop and checked the battery connection (no issues).

Two weeks ago, I noticed that the charge light was no longer blinking and when I checked it, I found that the battery was fully charged.

It worked fine for a week then back to the same issue.

The computer always works fine on AC power and currently indicates "Battery Status: 2% available (plugged in)"

It has not moved from here since the problem started again.

I have tried:

- Checking the connection between the battery and laptop

- Switching chargers to one that is definitely working

- Updating Win 11

- Updating battery drivers

- Deleting and reinstalling battery drivers

- Doing a battery report (Below)

I think the battery has an internal fault that is causing failure to charge (most likely), OR whatever is returning those battery reports is faulty OR whatever you are using to charge the battery has an intermittent fault OR the outlet you are using to power the charger has an intermittent fault.

Try measuring battery voltage before and after using it in the laptop for  a long period of time and after the laptop stops due to lack or power.  Record the voltages at the time of measurement, and then please post them here.

Hi msc545,

Thanks for your reply.

I created the battery report using powercfg /batteryreport from the windows command prompt.

I have swapped out the charger with another HP charger and tried it on a different outlet.

I will have to grab a voltage meter when I go back into town so it may be a week or so before I can test that one.

Make sure all of your firmware is up to date.  Microsoft surfaces had an issue that the firmware had to be updated when it was out of date the units would not charge the battery.

If the laptop works without the battery then charger is functioning correctly. Take a cloth with a bit of rubbing alcohol on it (or some on-the-go alcohol swabs), and clean the metal contacts that connect your battery to your laptop.

Make sure to install all Windows important updates.

Install latest versions of your laptop device drivers you can download the latest device drivers from the device manufacturer or from your laptop manufacturer website.

Step 1

1. Shutdown your laptop.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Connect the AC power adapter to your laptop.

4. Power on the laptop

5. Open the Device Manager by typing Devmgmt.msc into Start Menu or from Control Panel.

6. Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1).

7. Shutdown the laptop.

8. Insert the battery.

9. Power on the laptop.

If the above suggestions won't resolve the battery charge issue, then follow the below steps.

Step 2

1. Shutdown the laptop.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Start the laptop with only AC adapter connected to laptop.

4. When you login to Windows OS connect the battery while Windows OS working.

Step 3

Reset the System Management Controller. Use one of these methods to reset the SMC, which controls battery management, battery status light.

1. Shut down the computer and disconnect the power cord.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Press and hold the power button for ten seconds.

4. Reattach the battery and AC power adapter, then start up the laptop.

Hopefully one of the above suggestions will help you resolve the battery not charging problem. If battery still doesn't charge, you may need to replace your battery.

Cleaning metal electrical contacts.

The quickest and most effective way is to use a pencil, assuming that you have one, to rub over it it. Pencils are great for the removal of oxides, without damaging the metal beneath.

Sorry for how long I've taken to reply. Work commitments have kept me away from the busted laptop.

I thought I'd start with the easiest one being more mechanically minded and clean the terminals with a pencil (thanks wee-eddie).

Can't believe it was that easy.

I was just too sure that Windows 11 was melting my old hardware to look for the obviously crusted up terminals. :D

Thanks Again everyone. Problem solved
